Partner Contributions

The main contribution of the department of Media Production of the Ilmenau University of Technology is to create the user interface of the mobile device. Mobile communications and many of the related services and value added services are an indispensable part of everyday life. It is necessary to create and design these special applications exactly to the needs of users. The development of a user-friendly interface with a good usability is the goal of the department of Media Production. The procedure consists essentially of the detailed analysis of requirements, development of design rules and the development of scalable methods. Therefor the department puts the focus on innovative technologies and trying to find new solutions.

The main contribution of the software systems / process informatics department of the Ilmenau University of Technology consists in concepts and solutions for workflow modelling. The project aims at the extension of workflow description languages for the model-based development of mobile, distributed, ubiquitous systems. The extensions cover relations to and the integration with other models, such as feature models for variability and structural models for system modelling. The objectives of the modelling are simulation, analysis, execution planning, deployment and configuration in a heterogeneous environment, as well as process execution. The results are evaluated within the domains logistics, facility management, and service coordination. The contribution will result in a flexible deployment of services, which in turn leads to a higher flexibility and additional services.

Profile of the University

The Ilmenau University of Technology has a long tradition for education of engineers of electrical and mechanical engineering. Today its profile covers technology, natural sciences, economy and media. Five faculties offer an inter-disciplinary program of 18 bachelor and 23 master curricula to 6400 students.

The department of Media Production of the Ilmenau University of Technology was launched with the introduction of media studies Media Technology, Applied Media Science and Media Economics. The aim of the department is to explore and to teach the proper use of media technology. Since 2002 research at the department has been headed by Prof. Dr. phil. Heidi Krömker in the field of human-computer interaction. In this context the department deals with user-centered design, usability of innovative technologies and media production processes for film, TV, radio and multimedia. In support of evaluation processes a very well-equipped usability lab was set up, making it possible to analyze under controlled conditions the interaction of users with innovative technologies.

The department software systems / process informatics has much experience in the research field of model-based development of systems and of process modelling. As another field of expertise, know-how on product lines and component technologies can be supplied.
